The Story Behind Southern Attire
It didn’t start with a business plan. It started with an attire.
When I moved to Pune in 2000, life had a certain quietness to it. I started teaching at Bhatiya Vidya Bhavan, fully intending to spend my days in a classroom full of five-year-olds. What I didn’t plan for was my co-teachers stopping me in the hallway to ask, “Where did you get that fabric?”
I’ve always dressed with intention. Growing up rooted in the Saurashtra weaving community, fabric was never just material to me. It was craft, culture, and conversation. I would source directly from weavers in my hometown—people whose hands carry generations of skill—and bring back textiles that simply weren’t available off a shelf in Pune.
The appreciation turned into requests. The requests turned into a small bag of fabrics I’d carry back every summer. And that small bag? That was Southern Attire, before it had a name.
Today, we proudly offer a full-fledged catalogue featuring over 40 product categories, built over a journey of 18+ years.
Word spread the way it does when something is genuinely good, and slowly, the collection grew. So did the trust.
Southern Attire’s legacy remains rooted in the same thing it started with: honest fabrics, direct from the source, chosen with care. Not trend-chasing. Not mass-produced. Just beautifully made textiles with a story behind every thread.
What began as a compliment in a school corridor became something I’m quietly proud of every single day.
